Public Access
Ruckle Provincial Park on Salt Spring Island is open year-round, with walk-in campsites on the grass above the shore and the Beaver Point trail a few minutes from the parking lot. The park is about 15 minutes by road from the Fulford Harbour ferry.

Southern Gulf Islands Wall Art · British Columbia
The Southern Gulf Islands lie in the Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the mainland, close enough to the ferry terminals at Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen for a day trip and far enough to feel like somewhere else. Salt Spring is the largest and the busiest, Galiano is a long thin ridge along the ferry route, and Saturna is the quiet one at the outer edge. Between them run channels and passes that boaters know well, and almost every road on the islands ends at a beach, a dock or a point of rock with a view across the water to the next island.
I come over for the pace as much as the light. The islands have a settled, unhurried feel, and the people who live there seem glad of it, which rubs off on a visitor within a day. For a photographer the gift is shoreline. Whichever way the weather is coming from there is a stretch of coast facing the right direction, and the channels hold the colour of the sky long after the sun has gone. The first print in this gallery is a full rainbow over Pender Island, seen from Beaver Point on Salt Spring as a July storm came in.

Salt Spring Island Full Rainbow
Beaver Point is the southeast tip of Salt Spring Island, where Ruckle Provincial Park runs out to the water and the walk-in campsites sit on the grass above the shore rock. The view carries across Swanson Channel to Pender Island, and on a July evening the sky out there can change in minutes.
We were camped at Ruckle in 2022 when a storm showed on the horizon. I hiked out to Beaver Point and arrived as a rainbow started forming over Pender Island. It grew into a full arc with a faint second bow beside it, and I had a few frames before the rain reached us. The print is that arc, the brightest rainbow I have seen.
