About this Montague Harbour wall art
The beaches at Montague Harbour are white, but not with sand. They are shell, crushed clam and oyster built up over centuries by First Nations families who camped here each season to harvest shellfish. Where the beach meets the water, honeycombed sandstone runs out in low ridges, and the harbour is clear enough to show the ledges continuing below the surface.
I came down to the shell beach on a June evening in 2013, a few minutes before sunset, after working the sandstone points along the same shore. Two sailboats sat at anchor and the water had gone flat. I set a 17mm lens low beside one ridge so it points out into the harbour, and bracketed exposures to hold both the bright sky and the dark stone.
Pale shell, green shallows and a soft gold sky keep the tones light, so the frame suits a bright room or a hallway that needs some calm. Hang this Galiano Island wall art where you want the Gulf Islands close, a Montague Harbour print from a beach people have returned to for generations.

About This Spot
The white shell beach lies within Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park on the west side of Galiano Island, a short walk from the park's day-use parking. Galiano is reached by BC Ferries at Sturdies Bay from Swartz Bay or Tsawwassen, and the park is about 10 km west by road. The beach is a First Nations shell midden, so leave the shells where they lie, and come in the half hour before a summer sunset when the harbour usually goes calm and the reflections are at their best.

The image is dye-sublimated into the coating of a ChromaLuxe aluminum panel, not printed on top. That's what gives a metal print its depth, its luminescence, and its longevity. Comes ready to hang on a hidden mount that floats it half an inch off the wall.
The image is face-mounted behind a 1/8-inch optically pure acrylic panel. The thickness adds depth, giving the print a slight glass-like quality where the image seems to sit just behind the surface. Polished edges, with a hidden mount on the back that floats the print half an inch off the wall.
