About this Long Beach wall art

Long Beach faces the open Pacific, and on a clear summer evening the sun sets over the trees at the far end of the sand rather than straight out to sea. The surf runs in long low lines, spray hangs over the breakers, and once the sun is low enough the water, the mist and the wet sand all turn the same orange.

The west coast of Vancouver Island gets so much rain that you take the clear evenings as they come, even with no cloud to light up. On the first of July 2021 I walked down from Green Point and stood at the edge of the wash with a long lens as the sun dropped to the treeline. The sea mist and the breaking waves caught the colour on their own, and one person far down the beach gave the frame its scale.

About This Spot

This frame was made at the edge of the surf near the Green Point beach access, about midway along Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, looking northwest up the beach toward Tofino. Green Point is about 15 minutes south of Tofino on Highway 4, with day-use parking at the campground and a Parks Canada park pass required. In early July the sun goes down over the far headland rather than out over the water, and on a clear evening the colour keeps coming through the sea mist for a good while after the sky has gone plain.
