About this Buttle Lake wall art
Buttle Lake lies in the middle of Strathcona Provincial Park, a long narrow lake below the Island's highest peaks. It is also a reservoir. When the Strathcona dam went in during the 1950s the valley floor was logged before it flooded, and every summer, as the water is drawn down, the stumps of that old growth forest come back out of the lake and stand in the mud and the shallows along the shore.
We were camping at Buttle Lake with the family in August 2019, and I walked down to the shore in the evening. The sun had already dropped behind the ridge on our side, but the peaks at the far end of the lake were still lit, and the stumps made the foreground I needed. I set up low among them with the lake running away down the valley.
It is a strange and quiet place, half beach and half graveyard, and it only exists for a few weeks a year. This Buttle Lake wall art holds the stumps, the still water and the lit peaks in one frame, a Buttle Lake photo print with a story behind every stump.

About This Spot
This Buttle Lake print was made on the east shore at the north end of the lake, a short walk down from the Buttle Lake campground, looking south down the lake toward the peaks of the park's interior. The park is reached from Campbell River on Highway 28, about an hour's drive, and the campground sits beside the highway bridge at the lake's north end. The stumps appear from mid-summer into fall as BC Hydro draws the reservoir down, and they are under water again by spring. Evening light lands on the peaks at the far end after the near slopes have gone into shade.

The image is dye-sublimated into the coating of a ChromaLuxe aluminum panel, not printed on top. That's what gives a metal print its depth, its luminescence, and its longevity. Comes ready to hang on a hidden mount that floats it half an inch off the wall.
The image is face-mounted behind a 1/8-inch optically pure acrylic panel. The thickness adds depth, giving the print a slight glass-like quality where the image seems to sit just behind the surface. Polished edges, with a hidden mount on the back that floats the print half an inch off the wall.
