Hornby Island Wall Art and Fine Art Photography Prints

Hornby Island is not far from where I live, but the two ferries from Vancouver Island make it feel further away than it is. Most people know it for Tribune Bay, often counted among the best beaches in Canada, and the island has much more than that one beach. The bluffs at Helliwell, the fossil shore on the northwest side and the sunsets off Phipps Point are all worth the crossing. This gallery collects the places on Hornby I think are worth a visit.

Public Access

Tribune Bay Provincial Park and Helliwell Provincial Park are day-use parks open year-round, each 15 to 20 minutes by road from the Shingle Spit ferry dock. Getting there takes two ferries, Buckley Bay to Denman Island and Gravelly Bay to Hornby, with a short drive across Denman in between.

About This Gallery

Hornby Island Wall Art · Northern Gulf Islands, BC

Hornby Island sits in the Strait of Georgia off the east coast of Vancouver Island, the outer of the two Northern Gulf Islands beyond Denman. From Buckley Bay it takes a ferry to Denman, a drive across that island and a second ferry to Shingle Spit, and by the time you roll off the second ramp the highway feels a long way behind you. The island is small enough to drive around in an afternoon, home to a long-standing community of painters and potters, with a shoreline of sculpted sandstone that changes at every point.

Tribune Bay is the reason most people come. The beach is a long curve of pale sand on the south side, and at low tide the water runs out over shallow flats that warm through a summer afternoon, which is why it turns up on lists of the best beaches in Canada. The rest of the island rewards the people who keep going. Helliwell Provincial Park has a loop trail along open bluffs above the strait, Fossil Beach on the northwest shore has fossils set in its rock, and Phipps Point on the west side looks across Lambert Channel and Denman to the Vancouver Island mountains at sunset.

I live in the Comox Valley, close enough that Hornby is a day trip on the map. The ferries set the pace once you are on the way, and that slower pace is part of what I like about the place. The west side gets the sunset over Vancouver Island and the east side gets the strait and the morning light, so there is somewhere to be at either end of the day. This gallery is the places on Hornby I would send a friend to see.

About the Prints

Hornby Island Photography Print Options

Phipps Point Pier as a framed print.

Framed Print

The print is on 230gsm archival matte paper, matted with a two-inch Peterboro white core mat, and finished in a thin black wood frame. The most traditional of the three finishes, and the one that suits almost any room.

Phipps Point Pier as a metal print.

HD Metal Print

The image is dye-sublimated into the coating of a ChromaLuxe aluminum panel, not printed on top. That's what gives a metal print its depth, its luminescence, and its longevity. Comes ready to hang on a hidden mount that floats it half an inch off the wall.

Phipps Point Pier as a acrylic print.

Acrylic Print

The image is face-mounted behind a 1/8-inch optically pure acrylic panel. The thickness adds depth, giving the print a slight glass-like quality where the image seems to sit just behind the surface. Polished edges, with a hidden mount on the back that floats the print half an inch off the wall.

Phipps Point Pier

Phipps Point is on the west side of Hornby Island, where an old concrete pier runs straight out from the rocks into Lambert Channel. The slabs are split and cracked from end to end, and it is still the place people throw crab traps for red rock crabs or jump in for a swim on a hot day.

I was out there at about twenty past nine on a June evening in 2022, with the sun going down behind Denman Island and the Vancouver Island mountains lined up beyond it. I kept the camera low at the shore end so the cracks would lead along the pier to the far end. The print is that pier as it really is, with the last of the light on the water around it.
