Sunshine Coast Wall Art and Fine Art Photography Prints

The Sunshine Coast sits across the strait from Vancouver Island, on the mainland side of the Salish Sea, and you reach it by ferry from either side. From my side of the water the sun comes up over the sea. Over there it goes down over it, behind the mountains of Vancouver Island, and that is what I cross for. This gallery holds the evenings I have spent on the rocks of the Sunshine Coast watching the island turn into a silhouette.

Francis Point Provincial Park near Madeira Park is open year-round for day use, with a small gravel lot at the end of Merrill Road and a short trail to the rocks above Middle Bay. The park is on Highway 101, reached by the Horseshoe Bay to Langdale ferry from Vancouver, or from the Comox Valley by the Little River to Powell River ferry and then Saltery Bay to Earls Cove.

About This Gallery

Sunshine Coast Wall Art · British Columbia

The Sunshine Coast is the stretch of mainland shore that runs north from Gibsons past Sechelt and Pender Harbour toward Powell River, cut off from Vancouver by water and reached by ferry. On the map it faces Vancouver Island across the Strait of Georgia, close enough that the island's mountains fill the western horizon. The shoreline is rock more than sand, dark headlands and small sheltered bays with arbutus and pine leaning out over the water, and Highway 101 links the harbours and villages along it.

I photograph Vancouver Island's east coast most mornings, and from there the sun rises over the Salish Sea. The Sunshine Coast has the opposite view. The sun sets over the same water and drops behind the island I live on, and on a clear summer evening the strait holds the colour long after it has gone. That is the reason I make the crossing. Francis Point Provincial Park near Madeira Park is one of the places I go for it, a short walk from the road to a seat on the weathered rock above Middle Bay, where the water inside the bay goes still enough to hold the whole sky.

The first print in this gallery is that bay at the end of an August evening in 2018, the afterglow spread across the water with Vancouver Island dark on the horizon. More of the coast will join it as I make the trip back.

Sunshine Coast BC wall art from this gallery is available in matte paper, metal, acrylic and framed finishes, in sizes from small-wall to large, with Sunshine Coast BC photo prints shipping from a Canadian printer and separate US fulfilment for orders from the States.

Sunshine Coast Photography Print Options

Sunshine Coast Middle Bay Reflection as a framed print.

Framed Print

The print is on 230gsm archival matte paper, matted with a two-inch Peterboro white core mat, and finished in a thin black wood frame. The most traditional of the three finishes, and the one that suits almost any room.

Sunshine Coast Middle Bay Reflection as a metal print.

HD Metal Print

The image is dye-sublimated into the coating of a ChromaLuxe aluminum panel, not printed on top. That's what gives a metal print its depth, its luminescence, and its longevity. Comes ready to hang on a hidden mount that floats it half an inch off the wall.

Sunshine Coast Middle Bay Reflection as a acrylic print.

Acrylic Print

The image is face-mounted behind a 1/8-inch optically pure acrylic panel. The thickness adds depth, giving the print a slight glass-like quality where the image seems to sit just behind the surface. Polished edges, with a hidden mount on the back that floats the print half an inch off the wall.

Sunshine Coast Middle Bay Reflection

Francis Point reaches out from the Sechelt Peninsula near Pender Harbour, a low headland of dark rock with trees leaning over the water. Middle Bay sits between two arms of that rock, and on a calm evening the water inside goes flat enough to show the stones on the bottom and the sky above them.

In August 2018 I walked in from the trailhead for the sunset and took a seat on the rock above the bay. The sun went down behind Vancouver Island, and for a few minutes after it had gone the clouds turned pink, then red, and the colour spread across the bay. The print is that afterglow, held in the still water of Middle Bay.
