About this Butchart Gardens wall art

The Sunken Garden at Butchart Gardens fills an old limestone quarry at Brentwood Bay, half an hour north of Victoria, and every December it is lit from top to bottom. Hundreds of thousands of bulbs run along the paths and through the beds, the big conifers are wrapped in blue and green, the bare trees glow red under their lamps, and a star hangs over the trees at the far end.

Going to the lights is a tradition in my family, and we go back every December even though the Twelve Days of Christmas theme never changes. This was Christmas Eve 2012, damp as most December days are here. The wet path took the blue light and became the line through the frame, and a twenty-five-second exposure from the lookout let every bulb register.

This Butchart Gardens Christmas lights print is the view from the top of the stairs, the whole Sunken Garden lit at once. It is where our Christmas starts every year, and a Butchart Gardens photo print of it suits any family with the same tradition.

About This Spot

This Butchart Gardens print was made from the lookout at the top of the Sunken Garden, the viewpoint every visitor reaches first after the entrance, looking down the path toward the far end of the quarry. The Gardens are at Brentwood Bay, about 30 minutes north of Victoria off the Pat Bay Highway, with paid admission and a large car park. The lights run from early December into the first days of January, and the Gardens stay open into the evening for them.
