About this Fairy Lake wall art
Fairy Lake sits a few kilometres east of Port Renfrew on the Pacific Marine Road, a narrow lake hemmed in by second-growth forest on the way to Lake Cowichan. Out in the water a single Douglas fir grows from a stump that has been drowned for decades, roots gripping the old wood, its crown trimmed into a bonsai shape by whatever the winters bring.
In the summer of 2022 a covid scare changed our holiday plans overnight, so we camped near Port Renfrew instead and worked through the sights close by. The tree had been on my list for years, mostly from seeing other people's frames of it online. I pulled onto the gravel shoulder on a grey July afternoon, the lake flat under cloud, and made this frame with the long lens from the roadside.
It is the most photographed tree on the Island and it has earned that. This Fairy Lake bonsai tree print keeps the small fir and its stump in soft light against the forest wall, a piece of Fairy Lake Port Renfrew wall art for a room that likes a survivor.

About This Spot
This Fairy Lake print was made from the gravel pullout on the Pacific Marine Road, about ten minutes east of Port Renfrew, where the tree sits just offshore on the right-hand side heading toward Lake Cowichan, a short distance past the turn for the Fairy Lake Recreation Site campground. There is no formal parking, just the roadside shoulder with room for a few cars. Overcast days give the flattest water and the most even light on the fir.

The image is dye-sublimated into the coating of a ChromaLuxe aluminum panel, not printed on top. That's what gives a metal print its depth, its luminescence, and its longevity. Comes ready to hang on a hidden mount that floats it half an inch off the wall.
The image is face-mounted behind a 1/8-inch optically pure acrylic panel. The thickness adds depth, giving the print a slight glass-like quality where the image seems to sit just behind the surface. Polished edges, with a hidden mount on the back that floats the print half an inch off the wall.
